"I challenge you to find an area where your skills and interests align to our National need and rally the next generation of Americans to push the frontiers further... and COMPETE! for the Nation. That is my challenge to you. All of you. "

- Brigadier General Higer, 412 TW Commander

SparkED is the 412 TW Innovation Team for Airmen Innovators and AFWERX officially-recognized Spark Cell.

We are used to winning, but global conditions are changing
Our adversaries are lethal, and they are smart
The next conflict will be won by the best minds, not by the most might
Innovation grasps for agility and takes nothing for granted
The future will look nothing like the past
It is an uncomfortable journey, but one we must accept
We have all chosen to serve this great country
Refuse to stand by and watch our adversaries advance while we stumble and fall
We must step up, take control of our destiny, and do what is right
We have proudly started an innovation movement
It is our duty to chart the course of our nations future.
Our adversaries are not hiding behind rules and regulations, nor should we
Tired, traditional thinking will guarantee we lose
We must act boldly to ensure that our enemy cannot take away what is rightfully ours
It shouldn't take a war
Honor the history of this great place and those who have come before us.
We will lose and we will suffer if our cowardice causes us to avoid the risks of doing things differently
We must take massive action to say YES
This is a call to arms for those who care
Now, we need your commitment to act with courage and boldness, our nation needs us to make history today!

OUR STORY

XCITE TEAM 2015

The XCITE Team was established in 2015 and consisted of 3 senior leaders and volunteers. The senior leaders provided guidance for the long term strategy, coordinated training, conferences, and educational opportunities for airmen, approved funding for innovative ideas, and tracked the status of those efforts to promote innovation at Edwards Air Force Base, CA.

AFWERX, The Difference, & Gaping Void

AFWERX was established in 2017 by the SECAF and reporting to the Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force, AFWERX is a catalyst for agile AF engagement across industry, academia and non-traditional contributors to create trans-formative opportunities and foster a culture of innovation. The Difference was a consultant hired through AFWERX responsible for Eddie’s Big Quest for Innovation on the IdeaScale Platform, a crowd-sourcing challenge to find innovative ideas at Edwards. Gaping Void is a consultant hired through AFWERX to create the culture wall, manifesto, and the Edwards Innovation Playbook. Experts on culture and tying emotion to action, they are the creator of Eddie the Innovation Dragon.

116 Day Innovation Blitz

In September of 2018, the Hustle Squad was established to execute Brigadier General "Dragon" Teichert's 116 Day Innovation Blitz. The same amount of time it took to draft the Constitution of the U.S. In order to gain support for innovators around the base, he challenged the community to see how much they could accomplish in 116 days. The 116 Day Blitz concluded with the launch of Eddie's Big Quest for Innovation and the revealing of the Manifesto and Culture Walls in January of 2019.

Hustle Squad 2018

The Hustle Squad, a subset of the XCITE Team, was established in 2018 to execute key pieces of the innovation culture change initiative with a focus on relationship building, workforce engagement, and efforts that encourage and enable innovation.

Eddie’s Big Quest for Innovation

Eddie's Big Quest for Innovation was as a crowd-sourcing challenge at Edwards in search of innovative ideas. Using IdeaScale, a web-based platform, the Difference coined it as Eddie's Big Quest for Innovation. The quest toured B.G. Teichert at 8 different locations. Soliciting 162 ideas from the base community and bringing innovation to the forefront, it made Eddie's Big Quest the most active Air Force Challenge on IdeaScale as of February of 2019.

SparkED

In the Summer of 2019, The Hustle Squad became SparkED to tie into Air Force-wide Innovation efforts through Air Force Spark Tanks. SparkED decided to narrow the focus for the second Ideascale Challenge, "Eddie Needs the Right Ideas," targeting workplace efficiencies and new test capabilities/capacities. The campaign launched on Nov 8, 2019 and closed out Dec 13, 2019, with 174 ideas and 787 comments, making Edwards AFB #3 Air Force-wide and #1 in comments with 7,465. In January, a team of experts from Edwards in the “Spark Tank” Showcase chose 5 workplace efficiency and 3 test capability idea owners using a strategic rubric focusing on scope and impact of innovation wins. Breaking through barriers, building trust through flexibility and open communication, creating a culture of acceptance of failure, and celebrating small wins is what is propelling Edwards AFB forward as a leader in innovation.

Spouse SparkED

With the Ideascale platform being CAC-enabled, military spouses were not able to participate in the original campaign, Eddie’s Big Quest in the Spring of 2019. Pioneering a cultural change and giving a voice to the spouse community, Ms. Jill Helseth brought this to Brig. Gen. Teichert’s attention. As a result, the Spouse SparkED Team was formed to represent quality of life issues that military families face. In August of 2019, the Spouse Challenge brought 6 ideas to light, solving Spouse Employment problems and working with the Child Development Center for childcare solutions. In February of 2020, the team launched the Kid’s Innovation Challenge for 1st-6th graders to empower young idea owners to improve their community through innovation. Unfortunately, only 4 of the 6 course were taught before schools went to non-traditional instruction due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The SparkED - 412 TW Innovation still executed the Free Little Library Project with help from spouse volunteers in 4 base neighbors to help will access to reading and to boost morale.
