412th Civil Engineer Group
Winter is finally over, and spring has arrived! Despite the cold mornings or blustery winds, the weather is turning warmer. The Edwards AFB population is preparing to clear winter debris, remove dead plants and weeds, and tackle other much-needed cleaning during the annual Spring Clean-Up Week.
Brig. Gen. Douglas P. Wickert, 412th Test Wing commander, announced Spring Clean-Up Week will be April 21-25 and called on all base personnel to participate.
"The accumulation of trash is not only an eyesore, but it also increases fire hazard potential," Wickert said. "The strong winds create large accumulations of trash, brush, and other debris. It is important that all members — military, civilian and contractors — take time to clean up their areas, whether residential, commercial or professional, to ensure Edwards AFB continues looking its best."
To ensure compliance with base standards, facility managers are encouraged to use Spring Clean-Up Week for general interior and exterior housekeeping and to perform small self-improvement projects.
Facility managers may obtain self-help materials, such as trash bags and rakes, from the 412th Civil Engineer Group's U-Fix-It Store, Building 3500. The U-Fix-It Store is open Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and can be reached at 661-277-8335.
Facility managers can schedule bulk waste collection for large item disposal with the 412th CEG Requirements and Optimization Office at 661-277-3330. Dispose of hazardous materials (paint, chemicals, fluorescent light bulbs, batteries, etc.) by calling the HAZMAT Pharmacy at 661-277-0128.
Families living in Mayroad Housing may pick up household supplies, such as air filters, at the Mayroad Mojave Sky Community Center, 1365 Fitzgerald Blvd. Mayroad reminds residents to:
- Place recyclable items and green waste in the appropriate containers.
- Observe the 50-pound weight limit for trash and garbage.
- Request approval before recycling televisions.
Bulk and recycling pickup will be on the regularly scheduled days throughout Spring Clean-Up Week. Contact Mayroad Housing at 661-385-6060.
The base landfill, Building 7900, is a state-certified redemption center and authorized to reimburse customers for their California Redemption Value deposits paid on aluminum, glass, and plastic drink containers at the time of purchase. The landfill also provides recycling of non-CRV items, such as cardboard, paper, newspaper magazines, scrap metal and Styrofoam. Recycling hours are Monday-Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, 7:30-10:30 a.m. The Airman's Attic accepts donations of reusable household items.
