About the Role:

The Air Force Test Center is looking for a Full-Time Telecommunications Specialist (NH-0391-02) to work at the 412th Test Wing, 412th Mission Support Group, 412th Communications Squadron, Cable/Antenna Section (412 CS/SCOW) at Edwards Air Force Base, CA.

In this position you will be providing maintenance of the cyberspace base cable infrastructure to include troubleshooting and repair, communications cable splicing, Local Area Networking/Wide Area Networking (LAN/WAN) maintenance, Ground-to-Air Antenna maintenance, installation of Outside Plant/Inside Plant (OSP/ISP) cabling systems and quality assurance capability for the Cable & Antenna Maintenance section at Edwards AFB, California.

Typical 2025 salary range: $47,019 – $112,053 per year (includes locality)

Travel Requirements: Up to 25% travel possible

Desired Skills:

  • Two years of experience with Outside Plant fiber optics and copper cabling
  • Knowledge in Installing and terminating CAT6 Network cabling.
  • Able to climb towers and must be a team player.

Major Duties:

  • Performs maintenance on base owned communications cable, installations of OSP and ISP cable/wiring systems and may be appointed as government Quality Assurance Personnel (QAP) to monitor contractor performance and quality of installed communication systems to include fiber optics, copper core cable, voice and data premise wiring and modifications of maintenance work upon the various cable circuits and associated systems
  • Installs cable as required by buried or underground method. Diagnoses, locates and repairs troubles in cables, splices and terminals using established procedures and standard test equipment to include latest state-of-the-art equipment
  • Provides for planning, analysis, design, development, testing, quality assurance, configuration, implementation, integration, maintenance, and/or administration of network systems including LANs, WANs, and MANs, Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP), Internet/Intranet systems and premise wiring in support of voice and data requirements
  • Uses test equipment to locate faults such as, but not limited to, opens, transpositions, shorts, crosses and grounds in cables and makes repairs as necessary
  • Makes continuity tests from terminal locations and splice points to ensure there are no breaks in the circuit
  • Performs scheduled Preventive Maintenance Inspections (PMls) and unscheduled maintenance and repair on various type antennas (including but not limited to), UHF/VHF, Rotatable Log Periodic (RLP) and OMNI-directional antenna systems
  • Conducts technical inspections on antenna systems to ensure equipment conforms to prescribed technical performance standards and specifications
  • Conducts and interprets Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) tests
  • Performs other duties as assigned. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe, clean work environment. Uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing (Personal Protective Equipment)
  • Provides on-the-job-training (OJT) to lower grade employees, both military and civilian

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Requires at least a SECRET level security clearance and may require the ability to obtain and retain a TOP SECRET security clearance with special access
  • A physical is a condition of employment.
  • Shift work may be required to meet mission requirements/emergency situations.
  • Employee should not have a fear of heights.
  • Emergency overtimes may be required.
  • Will be required to possess a valid operator’s license in order to drive a motor vehicles to and from work sites and must possess certification to operate various pieces of heavy equipment to perform cabling responsibilities
  • Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures and technical practices in order to plan, layout, install, modify, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of complete communication cable systems
  • Knowledge of the principles and theories of telephony fundamentals; electronic principles, including theory of solid-state components, digital techniques, and copper core and fiber-optic transmission principles applying to telephone switching and network systems
  • Skill in using and maintaining a variety of hand tools, power tools, and test equipment to include laptop computers, and GPS tracking equipment and ability to operate variety of motor vehicles in support of cable installation, splicing, maintenance operations to include such vehicles as 1 ton truck, ¾ ton four-wheel drive line truck, and trenching machines
  • Skill in troubleshooting and tracing hard-to-locate defects or problems on large projects applying prescribed test procedures and equipment as required.
  • Ability to use electrical drawings, blueprints, engineering drawings, and wiring diagrams and to install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain various communications systems, controls, and equipment without more than normal supervision
