About the Role:

The Air Force Test Center is looking for a Full-Time Engineering Equipment Operator (WG-5716-10) to work at the 412th Test Wing, 412th Civil Engineer Group, 412th Civil Engineer Squadron, Heavy Repair Flight, (412 CES/CEOH) at Edwards Air Force Base.

In this position, you will serve as an Engineering Equipment Operator Journeyman with primary duties to perform functions such as cutting, moving, digging, grading and rolling earth, sand, stone and other materials and construct, maintain and repair rigid and flexible pavements, roads and runways and operate airfield sweepers and boom crane(s). A strong candidate would possess professional knowledge of engineering concepts, principles, and practices to provide all resources necessary to perform operation and maintenance services tasks inclusive of all accessories and components of the primary, secondary, ancillary, and auxiliary roads, streets, curbs, gutters, driveways, shoulders, pathways, bike paths, parking lots, sidewalks and concrete pads at Edwards Air Force Base and the Air Force Research Laboratory.

Typical 2025 salary range: $33.59 – $39.13 per hour (includes locality)

Areas of Consideration (AOC): Department – wide (DoD)

Desired Skills:

– Must have 3+ years of experience as heavy equipment operator such as Backhoe, Excavator, Loader Operator, Skid Steer, Bulldozer, Graders and Scrapers 

– Experience working with demolition

– 2 years of concrete forming and finish experience desired

– 2 years of asphalt repair or paving experience desired
 

Major Duties:

– Operate one or more types of heavy equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level earth to rough specifications.

– Operate boom cranes in a variety or outdoor areas where maneuverability is not limited and precise load placement is not critical.

– Maintain, repair, and construct flexible roads, pavements, parking areas, airdromes, bike paths, or similar surfaces of asphalt and concrete.

Qualifications/Requirements:

– U.S. Citizenship

– Obtain & maintain Security clearance

– Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical

– The incumbent must, as a condition of employment, possess and maintain a valid California Commercial Driver’s License (Class “A”) to operate general and special purpose vehicles both on and off the installation.

– The employee will be classified as Mission Essential

– Shift work may be required

– Emergency overtime may be required

– The employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends and/or holidays

– May be required to train/guide lower-graded (or other trades) military/civilian employees

– This is designated Drug Testing Position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use.

– Must obtain and maintain a current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification

– Will be required to participate in base contingency exercises

– Position may require the employee to operate a forklift up to 15,000-pound capacity to move heavy power support equipment

– May work with or around hazardous materials and/or hazardous working conditions

– The work will require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver’s license will be required for the position

– Flight line Driving/Testing is required

– Knowledge of engineering equipment such as graders, tractors with bulldozer or angle dozer blades, front-end loaders, backhoes, trench diggers, and large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments.

– Knowledge of subsurface preparation and methods and techniques of constructing and repairing asphalt surfaces.

– Ability to build set forms in straight lines and some curved forms that do not require precise measurements.
